On March 27th, Google announced $340 million in Google Ads credits available to all small & medium sized businesses with active accounts over the past year. Google is doing this as a way to help small businesses who have been devastated with the coronavirus pandemic. Google did not disclose the how it will calculate the credit amount or when advertisers will be receiving the credit. Credit notifications will appear in the advertiser’s Google Ads accounts and can be used at any point until the end of 2020 across all Google’s advertising platforms.

Why is Google doing this?

Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai said, “We hope it will help to alleviate some of the cost of staying in touch with their customers.” Google is known to offer advertising credits in the past to small business to advertise on their platform, so this isn’t new for them.

Another reason could be that Google’s ad business has taken a major revenue hit as businesses that have temporarily closed or reduced overhead spend have also stopped advertising on Google. By Google giving away millions of dollars in paid advertising credits, they are hoping it will get some of these businesses who had paused their advertising back on Google Ads.

Are you eligible?

If you are a small or medium sized business and have advertised on one of Google’s platforms (Search, Display, YouTube), you qualify. Google stated that the ad credits will be available to small and medium businesses, who advertise directly with Google or through their partners with active accounts since the beginning of 2019.

When do you receive the credits?

As of March 29, no one knows when these credits will be distributed. Google said that advertisers will be informed in the coming months through notifications within their Google Ads account. The Google Ads credit can be used at any point throughout 2020 and will expire on Dec 31, 2020.
